Betta Fish Care: Warnings and Advice

When maintaining betta fish care there are some important things that you need to take into consideration to make sure that they thrive and survive in their environment and remain happy and healthy. You can start off by making sure that you have a suitable sized tank for them, varied diet, filter, ornaments, fresh plants and clean them every week. There are also some important points to remember with betta fish care which are:

If you are planning on beginning a new tank then you must make sure that you learn all about the biological cycle before you add your betta to the water, because if you introduce your betta before the tank has had time to cycle, then it could end up dying from ammonia poisoning so make sure you allow your new tank to sit for a few days before purchasing your fish.

When considering betta fish care it is also imperative that you know that male betta fish cannot live with other male betta’s. They are called Siamese fighting fish for a reason because when they are in an aquarium they will fight to the death to protect their living space and the size of the tank doesn’t matter. If you tank doesn’t have a partition then you should not allow two male betta fish to live together because you will risk loosing one or both of them.

If you have a large tank then you might consider having another fish to live with your betta and although some bettas will live with other fish in the tank, it is better to let the fish have its own space. When buying other fish to live with your betta you should avoid buying another fish with bright fins because your betta might mistake it for another betta and also avoid aggressive fish such as barbs and fin nippers. You could try adding rasboras and tetras and bottom feeders are good choices to add you a betta fish tank.

Betta fish are sensitive to any change in temperature and a change in 2 to 3 degrees can actually lower its immune system so you need a heater for the tank to maintain betta fish care and the water temperature.

Never use distilled water because it is water with other minerals and nutrients which have been removed and bettas do not naturally live in such water and it can be harmful to their health if you force them to live in distilled water.
