Controlling Barking Dogs,
Understanding And Dealing With It

If you are an animal lover you have probably had a few dogs in your life, some good and some not so good. One of the most common behavioral problems that you hear people talk about is controlling barking dogs. Many people just get annoyed by this problem and tend to isolate the dog to solve the problem, but do not realize that they are actually making the problem worse. There are many ways to help your dog stop the excessive barking. If you do a little research into the real reason why your dog is barking you may be able to correct it easier.

There are many reasons why domesticated dogs bark. One of the instinctual ones is to warn another of danger. It has been shown that wolves often use this bark even though they barely bark. So why do domesticated dogs bark you ask. Studies have shown that dog barking today is caused by all kinds of things from really sensing danger or they just simply like the sound of their voice. You must research further why your dog is barking.

There are many ways to solve dog barking in excess. Some are a bit controversial, but if you have exhausted all other attempts your vet may give you the go ahead to try some harsher cures. One of the easier ways to start out is not paying any attention to the dog at all while it is barking. Then when the dog is quiet you pet and praise them for being quiet. After about two or three weeks of this constant process you should start to see some improvement. If you do not you should consult your vet on what step he recommends next.

Another very popular method is the use of prescription calmers. They do not always work, but it may for you. One other method that is a bit controversial is a shock collar. They do work really well for most. The last and final resort, which I do not approve of, is to actually have the dog debarked. It is to only be used as a last and final resort.

The best advice is to do the research into what is making your dog bark and find the remedy that is best for him or her. Dog barking is a bit of a problem, but if you love your dog you will do anything for them.
