Discus Fish Breeders Rules Of Thumb

Discus fish breeders should know all about how to look after discus fish, what they require to survive and thrive and what they require in order to breed successfully. There are some important points that you should consider and take into account when you are breeding discus fish.

You should make sure that you have a large flat bottomed tank for your discus fish to breed in, and discus fish breeders should make sure that the water pH level is kept at 6.5 and the temperature should be at 86 degrees Fahrenheit for breeding discus fish. You should also add something for the fish to lay their spawn on such as an over turned flower pot or and type of vertical surface you should add some potted plants to your aquarium to give the fish something to hide behind.

Discus fish breeders should know that if the quality of the water is good and it is maintained, then the discus fish will continue to have a large appetite which helps when it comes to breeding them. You can feed them tetra color bits, blood worms. Live white worms, frozen shrimp and beef heart, but if you do feed them beef heart you should make sure that none of it is left over because it will make the water dirty very quickly.

Breeding discus fish should lay eggs around once a week up to fifteen times and they will go through two spawning cycles each year. The eggs of the discus fish will usually take around 48 hours to hatch and around 72 hours later they should be free swimming around the tank. When the fish become free swimming, you should notice that they attach themselves to the side of their parents’ so that they can begin to feed from the mucous that the parents produce during breeding time. Discus fish breeders should begin to feed the newly hatched discus fish brine shrimp after around 5 days once they become free swimming, and it is important to remove the fry two to three weeks after they reach the free swimming stage because this can be dangerous to the health of the parents’ if they stay in the tank for much longer.

For more information on breeding discus fish, take a trip to your local pet store, one which deals in fish especially discus fish and don’t be afraid to ask any questions that you need answered about the breeding of the fish.
