How to Take Care of a Betta Fish: Purchasing a Betta

An important point and step to take when asking how to take care of a betta fish, is to make sure that before you even purchase the betta fish you should always prepare the tank first. Choose a 5-10 gallon tank, line the bottom with gravel or colored stones and add silk or real plants (try not to use plastic plants as these can damage the betta’s fins) and be sure to add a few ornaments for the betta fish to explore. Then add the water to around 80-90% capacity and add a water conditioner to remove harmful chlorines from the water. Once this is done, you are now ready to learn how to take care of a betta fish and your first step is to buy your fish!

If you visit your local vet or pet store then you will be able to take a look at some different types of betta fish and there are certain qualities that are important to remember when it comes to choosing a betta fish and they are:

Color: what color are the betta fish that are available to you? Betta fish come in many different colors; the most common colors are blue and reds. Look out for bright and vivid betta fish instead of dull and pale colored betta’s.

Receptiveness: there are a few things to look out for when it comes to purchasing your betta fish so that you know hot to take care of a betta fish. Observe the fish to see if they are responding to your movement by swimming around quickly at the sight of you, or does it sit at the bottom of the tank, unresponsive? This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t buy a more docile betta, they might simply be resting, but you should always take this into consideration when picking your fish.

Health: when looking to purchase a betta, it is important to check out its health. Check to see if its fins are in good condition and not torn or damaged. Check for lumps or abnormalities on the skin surface and make sure its eyes are healthy. If in doubt, choose a different betta.

Let your fish choose you: when it comes to asking the question, how to take care of a betta fish then it helps if you pick the right fish for you, or let the betta pick you. If you are drawn to a particular fish then buy it, even if it is not the healthiest one there because the chances are that you will be able to nurture and take care of it and you will in turn get a great pet.
